Chapter 1: An Unexpected Event

Kia stood beside Rial, the heir to the Nadil-Kuradi Empire, in the command center of the royal flagship the Kadaugan, relief flooding through her as she watched the flickering wormhole beacons disappear in the rearview screen. Rial had insisted she share the piloting and, although she might never attain his level of skill, she was improving. Despite Rial sitting beside her, ready to assist if needed, hurtling past the pulsing walls, expanding and contracting in some unfathomable rhythm was still a mind-numbing and nerve-wracking experience.

She pushed a gold-blonde curl behind her ear. Her hair was tied back, but strands always wriggled free. As the pilot, Tamaiko switched to the forward real-time viewscreen, she bent down to get a better look, brushing Rial's arm. Their destination, Matautia—the fifth and largest planet orbiting an old yellow dwarf in the Shineal System—dominated the screen.

"Feeling anxious, Consort?" Rial glanced sideways at her, a teasing smile on his lips, his green eyes playful.

She elbowed him in the ribs. "No, and don't start with the titles again."
