Ruby voids the contents of her stomach into the crud-caked toilet bowl. She really should ease up on the booze; she can't recall how many times this has happened recently. There's a clattering of feet and a quick rap on the bathroom door.

"C'mon! Hurry up! Some people gotta get to work."

She hates sharing a bathroom; you can't even throw up in peace.

"Okay, Jim. Just a sec."

She hears him muttering and pacing outside while she rinses and spits the sour taste out of her mouth. She stares at her reflection in the glaze-cracked mirror; dark smudges under her eyes, pale waxy skin, copper dreadlocks. Is this how an aspiring rock star is supposed to look? She opens the door and nearly heaves up again when the reek of old sweat and stale beer hits her as the neighbor pushes past.
